We are the 2008/09 Webbies. Our mission is to make our website more interesting and informative for everyone at Low Port Primary School. Our plans for the website include surveys, competitions, games and updates on what is going on in the school. We also want to get as much pupil work on the web. If you have any ideas to improve and make our website more child friendly, please let us know!Check out the class pages now for trip reports, photographs and pupils work.
November 2008
Last month each classroom was given a Nintendo DS with the Brain Training game for use by pupils. The introduction of Nintendo DS's into schools started out as a small experiment to see if mental agility games such as Nintendo's Dr Kawashima's Brain Training have an impact on children's ability to learn. The answer seems to be yes.
To quote the Learning Teaching Scotland website -
"The use of ICT, and games in particular, is about education tapping into a resource that has cultural resonance for pupils. This is something that pupils buy into that can also raise attainment levels."
But what do the children at Low Port think? We did a survey to find out!
1. Is it good having a Nintendo DS in class?
Apart from a handful of pupils, everyone agreed it was a good idea!
2. Why do we have a Nintendo DS in class?
Here are some answers we got:
- to learn maths
- to learn our times tables
- to help with our learning
- for educational purposes
- to make learning fun
- to gain speed and accuracy
- because it makes you think!
3. Can you suggest any other games/electronic equipment we could get to use in the classroom?
Again a variety of answers, here are just a few:
- Big Brain Academy
- video cameras to allow us to make animations
- Word training (DS)
- Sight training (DS)
- a Wii
If you have anything else to say about Nintendo DS's or any other ICT related stuff, let us know about it!!
COMPETITION TIME - DO YOU KNOW YOUR TEACHER?
We recently went round the teachers and asked them some quick fire questions about their likes and dislikes. Which teacher do you think gave these answers?
1. X factor or Strictly Come Dancing

2. football or rugby

4. maths or language

5. tea or coffee

6. beach or sightseeing

All the correct answers will be put into a hat and the first one pulled out will win a prize!!! Get your entries in by Friday 14th November. Good luck.
PPP - PUBLISHED PUPIL PIECE
This month's published pupil piece comes from Matthew D (P5) and it's a poem of Autumn.
Down by the reeds,
On the big brown trees,
The wind whistles through the great oak,
The water replies like laughter on a joke.
On the branches near the sky,
Water drips as clouds begin to cry.
Leaves float down, all yellow and red,
Onto the ground and their grassy bed.
The branches are now growing bare,
A squirrel jumps around, and on the ground a hare.
A fox prowls about, with nothing to fear,
The last few leaves fall through the air.
The fox goes back to his hidden lair.
Hallowe'en night brings scary fun,
And many creatures fly off or run.
A thick carpet of leaves lie on the ground,
With the red and yellow and orange and brown.
Winter has nothing yet to defend,
Far down the old road and round a bend,
The time of Autumn is at an end.
Falling, falling, falling.
On the big brown trees,
The wind whistles through the great oak,
The water replies like laughter on a joke.
On the branches near the sky,
Water drips as clouds begin to cry.
Leaves float down, all yellow and red,
